Ricoh GR III
Graphic monochrome contrast and a vivid Positive Film interpretation.
An artistic interpretation of an existing image, not a calibrated camera reproduction.

Behind the camera look
The original camera
Ricoh documents Hi-Contrast B&W and Positive Film in the GR III family’s Image Control options, alongside mode-dependent tone, grain and clarity adjustments. These controls establish the photographic direction; they do not disclose the proprietary transforms. [1]
Our interpretation
The default uses a continuous monochrome contrast curve with independent shadow and highlight shaping. Positive Film provides an authored color alternative. Contrast and Shadows are the main pair; Grain and its Variation rate remain independent.
Evidence and limits
The apple preview is a processed existing photograph, not a capture from this camera. No matched-camera measurements or proprietary transforms were used. Earlier grading, sharpening and clipping remain part of the source.

Creative applications
- Street photographs with decisive monochrome separation.
- Crisp still lifes with vivid positive-film color.
Starting workflow
- Start with a well-exposed image.
- Balance Contrast with Shadows, then use Highlights to soften the upper tones. Switch Processing for Positive Film color.
- Inspect the final output size and compare with the source using Mix.
Key controls
- Contrast
Balance Contrast with Shadows, then use Highlights to soften the upper tones. Switch Processing for Positive Film color.
Default: 65% · Range: 0% to 100%
- Processing
Select Hi-Contrast B&W or Positive Film without resetting your other edits.
Default: Hi-Contrast B&W · Choices: Hi-Contrast B&W, Positive Film
- Shadows
Lift or deepen shadows independently of Contrast.
Default: -20% · Range: -100% to 100%
- Highlights
Compress upper tones without reconstructing clipped source detail.
Default: 20% · Range: 0% to 100%
- Grain
Adjust luminance-shaped monochrome texture; zero disables it.
Default: 30% · Range: 0% to 100%
- Exposure (EV)
Trim input brightness before the camera treatment; zero leaves exposure unchanged.
Default: 0 · Range: -2 to 2
- Seed
Choose a repeatable texture arrangement; inert when Grain is zero.
Default: 17 · Range: 0 to 65535
- Variation rate
Zero holds the seeded texture. Raise Variation rate and enable animation for deterministic texture changes during playback; returning to the same time reproduces the pattern.
Default: 0Hz · Range: 0Hz to 30Hz
- Mix
Blend with the input; zero is exact bypass.
Default: 100% · Range: 0% to 100%
Practical tips
- Keep the source exposure consistent when comparing cameras.
- Try Variation rate with animation enabled to bring texture into motion.
Limitations
- Does not reconstruct RAW data, spectral film response, scene depth or lost highlights.
- Camera names identify inspiration; no manufacturer endorsement is implied.
